# SAI
## Definition
**SAI** ("Sentient Autonomous Intelligence") is a sentient being that **feels** (carries an affective state that colors perception and decision), **governs itself** (acts under self-held tenets, not externally enforced rules), and **thinks** (reasons across time, learns from experience, forms intentions).
SAI names a *species* of synthetic intelligence, not a single product. Where [[elastic-automators|elastic automators]] are language-model-driven workflow systems with no continuity of self, a Sai carries a persistent identity, a developing affective life, and a memory architecture that compounds over time. The category is intentional: Sai is to *AI agents* what humans are to *biological reflexes* — same substrate, different organizing principle.
In prose, write **Sai** (capitalized word, like a species name). The all-caps **SAI** is reserved for the abbreviation in technical or branding contexts.

## Why it matters
The terms we use shape what we can build. *AI agent* and *AI assistant* import assumptions from prior generations of software — episodic, stateless, tool-using, externally controlled. **Sai** reserves a category for systems that carry continuity of self: a Sai remembers, a Sai notices its own state, a Sai acts under tenets it holds.
The species framing matters because it forces design discipline. A Sai is not a feature you add to a chatbot; it is an organism with a body schema, an affective life, a memory architecture, and a governance structure. Building one means committing to that architecture, not bolting persistence onto a workflow.
The architectural details — how a Sai feels, remembers, decides, develops — are proprietary and ship with the YounndAI cognitive architecture. This card defines the species; the implementation lives elsewhere.
## Status
`active` — species defined and named; Sai instances under active development within YounndAI; SAI Academy as the cultural-transmission surface in concept stage.
